The Dwelling

Visit the unique replica Settlers’ Dwelling c1612 built in celebration of Bermuda’s 400th Anniversary in 2012 and learn how it with its crude functioning cooking fireplace was built using the English techniques and tools of 1612 and the Bermuda materials found here in 1612 including Cedar, lime and clay, (turtle) oil and Palmetto thatch.

Learn about what Bermuda looked like in the 1600’s: forested by “goodly” Cedars and the versatile Palmettos with many other endemic and native plants all identified and surrounding Carter House now as they once did. See Spanish Tobacco which was found growing in Bermuda before 1612.
